International Victim Advocate Exchange Project

Home

The International Victim Advocate Exchange Project helps victim advocates -- whether involved in direct service, research, government or academia -- to connect with, and arrange visits or exchanges between, victim services or institutions in different countries. The goal of the Exchange Project is to promote visits and exchanges between programs in different countries for the purposes of: professional education; cultural understanding; the development of collegial and cooperative projects; and the sharing of knowledge and learned experiences. The Exchange Project is administered and coordinated on a volunteer basis by victim service agencies in multiple countries, as a free service to the international victim assistance community.

Almost every country in the world now possesses crime victim assistance and support services, whether organized as part of the criminal justice system, as public non-profit agencies, or as part of academic institutions.  Inevitably, victim advocates or researchers in one country have wished they could visit professionals in other lands in order to: see how methods and programs differ from country-to-country; to experience first-hand the regional and national issues and challenges found in different lands; and to share hard-learned knowledge and personal experiences.

While there is presently no global agency with the resources to fully sponsor and organize such a program for advocates, there is another resource available;   the formal and informal networks of contacts and communications which victim service agencies and organizations form as a matter of their day-to-day business.

The International Victim Advocate Exchange Project seeks to make use of this resource by providing a free point-of-contact and networking service for interested agencies and individual advocates.  The Project puts victim advocates, academics and agencies in one country in touch with their counterparts in others, working through the above mentioned formal and informal networks, so that agencies and individuals involved can work out professional, legal, funding and travel details issues.

The Exchange Project is designed to serve:

  • Victim service, assistance and support agencies and organizations of all kinds, including international, national, regional and non-governmental/non-profit

  • Individual front-line service professionals who work directly with victims of crime, tragedy and the abuse of power

  • Academics, academic institutions and professionals in the fields of criminal justice, criminology, law, law enforcement, psychology, sociology, victimology, and other associated fields
